Real-time Student Progress Reports: Simplicity with a Personalized Learning Platform

Monitoring a student’s overall academic performance at any given moment can be an arduous and time-consuming process. A teacher or administrator may need to prompt multiple teachers to provide the latest progress reports in order to put together a complete picture of a student’s performance at that point in time.

Pinpointing any issues the student is experiencing is another uphill battle.  For example, if a student is having a rough time in Algebra, her teacher may have difficulty pinpointing why.

  • Is the trouble with a certain concept?
  • Did she not understand the assignment’s directions?
  • Did she miss prior concepts that prevent her from understanding the current lesson?
  • Are any other students having the same problems?

At Crater Lake Charter Academy in Eagle Point, Oregon, this difficult monitoring process is no longer a concern. Since adopting PEAK

FuelEd’s Personalized Learning Platform—in 2014 to help them personalize, integrate, and manage all of their online learning programs, they have been able to utilize fantastic insights at lightning speed.

Bryan Wood, principal at Crater Lake Charter Academy stated that “PEAK gives us data that we can use to make informed decisions. We’re looking at data and making changes based on data.”  He continued to say that “PEAK is very helpful in giving us accurate, up-to-date data on a daily basis.” He appreciates the ability to “go in and look at students’ performance daily.”

The ability to easily aggregate useful information is extremely helpful when Wendy Daw, an administrator at Crater Lake, needs to pull reports for parents, students, and board members. She said that “I can just easily click on the data I need, select it, and the data is there for me right away.”

Administrators can break reports down by an individual:

  • School
  • Grade level
  • Teacher
  • Mentor
  • Student

Gone are the days of waiting around for teachers to deliver student reports, making sense of their grading criteria and grades, and calculating the answers needed. Dianne Kinney, a teacher at Crater Lake, said that “One of the things I have truly come to appreciate here with FuelEd and PEAK is that I can get a better snapshot, electronically, of the whole student.  It’s not ‘how they’re doing in geometry class,’ it’s ‘how are they doing across the board?’”  

In addition to solving the persistent problem of overall student performance records, Amy Lemke, a teacher at Crater Lake, said PEAK has many other benefits. Ms. Lemke stated that “I use [PEAK] to get student information when they last logged in. I can call home and say ‘Hey, you haven’t logged in for awhile. Are you out of town? Are you sick? Did something happen? Can I help you? Is there anything that I can do to make you go back online and focus back on school?’”

Ms. Lemke continued, “That’s where we store most of our parent phone numbers and addresses. We use it for progress reports and report cards. Basically anything and everything, like a little home for all their activities.” PEAK is a hub of useful information for students, teachers, administrators, and parents alike. One can instantly check in on a student’s progress at any time of day for any number of subjects.
