Online and blended learning advocates argue that a major advantage that students gain in these environments is autonomy.

With graduation behind us and a new school year nearing, we asked recent and upcoming graduates: How did online learning prepare you for life after graduation?

Several students noted that online learning helped them boost independence, gain a sense of responsibility, and strengthen life skills overall while still enabling a rigorous and flexible academic path. Continue reading below to learn more about why online learning is beneficial to life after high school.

Student from Poudre Global Academy:

Online learning has prepared me for life after graduation in many ways. Learning online requires a great deal of responsibility. You have to make sure that you log into class every day and complete your assignments and notes.

Online learning has taught me how to be responsible in life. Whether it’s at a job or in college, I learned that the most important tasks in life come first, and the fun comes later! Another thing that online school has taught me is how to tackle really big writing assignments; online school requires A LOT of writing. At times, it can be overwhelming. I learned how to manage my time to get it done and ended up successful in the end. This really came in handy when I started college because I have to do just as much writing there.

Student from Mountain View High School:

Online learning prepared me by letting me make my own schedule. In traditional school, you are stuck in a school all day throughout your learning career, but with online classes you can work and still maintain school responsibilities. I believe those responsibilities are a big part of life during and after high school. Online learning helped me deal with the inconvenience and unpredictability of life and events that can occur during work or school, or anything really. Online learning prepared me for the unpredictability of the real world.

Student from Poudre Global Academy:

I am currently attending Colorado State University (CSU) working toward a Bachelor degree in Hospitality Management with a minor in Business Administration. I think going to school online helped me become a better, more balanced person. It also helped me to mature and set me up for success where I am. At CSU, I am able to take over 15 credits a semester, work full time, and do other things and still do well.
