Students choose to become online learners for many different reasons. For some students, it provides access to a wider variety of courses. Others who may suffer from emotional or medical issues chose online learning as an alternative to a traditional brick and mortar setting. And, more still have even more distinctive and individual reasons that draw them to online, personalized learning.

We recently reached out to successful, past online students to ask them: Why did you become an online learner?

Student from Mountain View High School:

I became an online learner because I just didn't like working and learning around a lot of people. It was chaotic. I often found myself being the quiet one: not wanting to ask questions. My quiet nature didn't compliment my grades so well, so I just decided it was time for a change and tried online learning. Then, a year after starting online school, I conceived my son. Online learning helped me finish school as I prepared to have a child.

Student from Mountain View High School:

I decided to switch to online learning because I only needed a few more credits to complete high school. It wasn't enough to fill the daily schedule at Mountain View, so I decided online learning would be better. I could finish high school and work at the same time without having to worry about what times my three classes were offered during the day because I could just work on my school work whenever I had time.

Student from Miami-Dade Online Academy:

I was missing too many days at my old school due to the fact that I was in and out of the hospital, so joining Miami-Dade Online Academy was a welcome option for me. With my disease, I have good days and bad days—sometimes more bad days in a row. My school gives great flexibility and ease when I am in the hospital because I know I can still complete my work.

Student from Poudre Global Academy:

I became an online learner because I was really struggling socially in public school. I was just an extremely shy person and never really felt like I fit in. This hindered me in my studies. I was too afraid to raise my hand in class if I didn’t understand the material in fear of being made fun of by my classmates. My mom realized that I was struggling, and she was actually the one that told me about PSD Global Academy. Ever since then I have fallen in love with my educational path.

Student from Poudre Global Academy:

I had many bad experiences in traditional high school. I was tired of the structure and was at an awkward point in my curriculum. When I moved to Colorado from Germany, where I had been living because my father is in the Army, I would have been taking classes with freshmen in a traditional high school. Online learning allowed me to take extra class loads and graduate in less time than I thought it would take.
