2013 marked a year of tremendous growth for online learning—especially in the K-12 arena. With more than 3 million students now taking online or blended learning courses, and 30 states with more than 300,000 students taking online courses full-time, last year was very much a tipping point for online learning.
For district leaders who have yet to embrace online learning, now is the time to look at opportunities to create an expanded catalog of courses, offer flexible learning, and deliver tailored instruction to meet students’ educational needs.
These are some of the key insights from a recent Learning Outside the Lines podcast interview with Bruce Friend, who is a well-known education technology consultant. With more than 20 years of online learning leadership with organizations such as Fuel Education and the Virtual Independent School Network, as well as state-wide online programs, Friend is a recognized expert who also discusses both challenges and opportunities when it comes to online learning.
