Use this guide to accompany Lesson 2.07, Semester A. Multiple Transformations LESSON GOALS • Solve two-step equations. FLORIDA STANDARDS • MAFS.8.EE.3.7b. Solve linear equations with rational number coefficients, including equations whose solutions require expanding expressions using the distributive property and collecting like terms. • MMAFS.K12.MP.3.1 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. PACING One class period, approximately 60 minutes CONTENT BACKGROUND In Lesson 2.07, students solve equations that contain two operations. As students have learned to do to solve one-step equations, inverse operations are used to isolate the variable. Students first identify the two operations used in the equation, which helps them identify the inverse operations to use. Because they are "undoing" the operations used in the equation, they then apply the inverse operations in the reverse order of operations: add or subtract, then multiply or divide. Lesson 2.08 also builds on students' earlier work with equations. Before applying the two inverse operations to solve the equation, they may need to simplify the equation by combining like terms and/or applying the distributive property.
