Exchange Ideas FLORIDA STANDARDS • MAFS.8.F.2.4 Construct a function to model a linear relationship between two quantities. Determine the rate of change and initial value of the function from a description of a relationship or from two (x, y) values, including reading these from a table or from a graph. Interpret the rate of change and initial value of a linear function in terms of the situation it models, and in terms of its graph or a table of values. • Also LAFS.8.SL.1.1c., LAFS.8.SL.1.2, ELD.K12.ELL.SI.1 PACING One class period, approximately 60 minutes 4.01 DISCUSSION: LINES To introduce some of the concepts covered in this unit, students complete an assignment and post it to the discussion board. For this assignment, students find an example of a slope in real life. Students post a presentation of a picture, screenshot, or drawing of their example next to a graph of the slope. Students explain their graph and describe the real-life example that it is based on. To participate in the discussion, students will respond to another student's post by writing the equation of the student's line in point-slope form, standard form, or slope-intercept form. Students should explain their reasoning for choosing that form. Each student will also respond to replies made by other students on his or her own post throughout the unit. Make sure to review student responses regularly. LESSON GOALS • Represent a linear function as an equation in point-slope form, given its graph. • Represent a linear function as an equation in standard form, given its graph. • Represent a linear function as an equation in slope-intercept form, given its graph. MATERIALS • Exchange Ideas Threaded Discussion Rubric • Overview presentation • Alternate Assignment: Exchange Ideas • Alternate Assignment Answer Key: Exchange Ideas Use this guide to accompany Lesson 4.01, Semester A.
