LESSON GOALS • Sketch a graph of a real-world linear relationship. FLORIDA STANDARDS • MAFS.8.F.2.5 Describe qualitatively the functional relationship between two quantities by analyzing a graph (e.g., where the function is increasing or decreasing, linear or nonlinear). Sketch a graph that exhibits the qualitative features of a function that has been described verbally. • LAFS.8.SL.1.1a. come to discussions prepared, having read or researched material under study; explicitly draw on that preparation by referring to evidence on the topic, text, or issue to probe and reflect on ideas under discussion. • LAFS.8.SL.1.2 Analyze the purpose of information presented in diverse media and formats (e.g., visually, quantitatively, orally) and evaluate the motives (e.g., social, commercial, political) behind its presentation. PACING One class period, approximately 60 minutes CONTENT BACKGROUND Throughout this unit and the previous unit, students have learned to write equations to represent linear relationships. The information they needed to represent the relationships was given in verbal descriptions, tables, and graphs. Now they will apply some of the concepts they learned in these units to represent real-world linear relationships in graphs. To graph a relationship, students first select scales appropriate to the situation for the horizontal and vertical axes of a coordinate plane. After labeling and numbering the axes, they plot two points on the plane and draw a line through the points. Students are given two pairs of related quantities, which they have learned are the coordinates of points on the graph. Instead of one of these pairs of related quantities, they may be given a rate of change. They have learned that this is the slope of a line and can be used to find another pair of related quantities.
