Use this guide to accompany Lesson 5.01, Semester A. Exchange Ideas LESSON GOALS • Represent a real-world problem, using a system of two linear equations. • Solve a real-world problem represented by a system of two linear equations. FLORIDA STANDARDS • MAFS.8.EE.3.8c. Solve real-world and mathematical problems leading to two linear equations in two variables. • Also LAFS.8.SL.1.1b., LAFS.8.SL.1.1d. PACING One class period, approximately 60 minutes 5.01 DISCUSSION: SYSTEMS OF EQUATIONS To introduce some of the concepts covered in this unit, students complete an assignment and post it to the discussion board. For this assignment, students pretend they own their own cell phone company. In order to determine the monthly charges for their customers, students write an equation that includes a monthly flat fee plus a fee per 50 MB of data used each month. Students post the equation along with an explanation of terms. To participate in the discussion, students will choose another post and compare that student's plan with the their own plan. In order to compare the plans, students will set up and solve a system of equations using graphing, substitution, or elimination. Students also determine the amount of data usage that results in the two plans charging the same amount. In students' responses, they should also explain to customers when it would make more sense for them to choose their plan and when it would make more sense for them to choose the other student's plan. Each student will also respond to replies made by other students on his or her own post throughout the unit. Make sure to review student responses regularly.
