LESSON GOALS • Understand that the point of intersection of a system of linear equations is its solution. • Use graphing to solve a system of linear equations. • Use graphing to estimate the solution to a system of linear equations. FLORIDA STANDARDS • MAFS.8.EE.3.8b. Solve systems of two linear equations in two variables algebraically, and estimate solutions by graphing the equations. Solve simple cases by inspection. • MAFS.8.EE.3.8a. Understand that solutions to a system of two linear equations in two variables correspond to points of intersection of their graphs, because points of intersection satisfy both equations simultaneously. PACING One class period, approximately 60 minutes CONTENT BACKGROUND Lessons 5.03 and 5.04 work together to introduce students to solving systems of equations by graphing and then classifying systems based on the graphs and/or equations. In these lessons, students extend their prior knowledge of systems of linear equations by developing a solution strategy and an understanding of the number of solutions for each system. In previous lessons, students graphed linear equations in two variables as straight lines. In Lesson 5.03, students graph a system of linear equations, and see that the solution to the system is the point that lies on both lines (point of intersection). While graphing is a powerful strategy, students will begin to recognize the need for other strategies when lines intersect at points that have non-integer coordinates. In those cases, students recognize that graphing provides only an estimate for the solution.
