Use this guide to accompany Lesson 5.12, Semester A. Extended Problems FLORIDA STANDARDS • MAFS.8.EE.3.8b. Solve systems of two linear equations in two variables algebraically, and estimate solutions by graphing the equations. Solve simple cases by inspection. • MAFS.8.EE.3.8c. Solve real-world and mathematical problems leading to two linear equations in two variables. • MAFS.8.EE.3.8a. Understand that solutions to a system of two linear equations in two variables correspond to points of intersection of their graphs, because points of intersection satisfy both equations simultaneously. PACING One class period, approximately 60 minutes OFFLINE LEARNING: SYSTEMS OF EQUATIONS The Extended Problems give students an opportunity to use higher-order thinking and critical reasoning skills to apply what they have learned about systems of equations. Students complete these extended response problems offline and submit their responses to be graded. MATERIALS • Extended Problems • Answer Key: Extended Problems LESSON GOALS • Solve a system of two linear equations graphically. • Solve a system or two linear equations algebraically. • Solve real-world problems using a system of linear equations. • Determine the number of solutions to a system of linear equations. EXTENDED PROBLEMS 277
