Use this guide to accompany Lesson 6.04, Semester A. Function Equations LESSON GOALS • Write function equations using a verbal description of the function. • Write function equations using a graph of the function. FLORIDA STANDARDS • MAFS.8.F.2.4 construct a function to model a linear relationship between two quantities. Determine the rate of change and initial value of the function from a description of a relationship or from two (x, y) values, including reading these from a table or from a graph. Interpret the rate of change and initial value of a linear function in terms of the situation it models, and in terms of its graph or a table of values. • MAFS.8.F.1.2 compare properties of two functions each represented in a different way (algebraically, graphically, numerically in tables, or by verbal descriptions). PACING One class period, approximately 60 minutes LEARN MATHCAST: FUNCTION EQUATIONS In this MathCast, students write an equation for a function given its word description. The function is also evaluated for x = 2. MATERIALS • Reference Guide pages 218–220 • Practice activity Book pages 195–200 • overview and Toolkit presentations KEYWORDS Students can preview definitions of keywords hyperlinked throughout the lesson. • function 290 FuncTIon EquaTIonS
