Use this guide to accompany Lesson 6.09, Semester A. Function Representations LESSON GOALS • compare the properties of two linear functions that are represented differently. FLORIDA STANDARDS • MAFS.8.F.1.2 compare properties of two functions each represented in a different way (algebraically, graphically, numerically in tables, or by verbal descriptions). • MAFS.8.F.2.4 construct a function to model a linear relationship between two quantities. Determine the rate of change and initial value of the function from a description of a relationship or from two (x, y) values, including reading these from a table or from a graph. Interpret the rate of change and initial value of a linear function in terms of the situation it models, and in terms of its graph or a table of values. • MAFS.K12.MP.1.1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. PACING One class period, approximately 60 minutes CONTENT BACKGROUND Student work with linear functions to this point has involved one function at a time. They have learned how to find slope and y-intercept, and will now apply these concepts to compare two functions using different representations (equation, table or graph). MATERIALS • Reference Guide pages 240–245 • practice Activity Book pages 223–232 • overview and Toolkit presentations 316 FuncTIon RepReSenTATIonS
