PACING One class period, approximately 60 minutes 1.01 DISCUSSION: SCIENTIFIC NOTATION To introduce some of the concepts covered in this unit, students complete an assignment and post it to the discussion board. For this assignment, students research to find a large or small number from a real-world situation. Students write the number in scientific notation and provide a hint that describes what the number represents. To participate in the discussion, students will guess what another student's number describes. Then students write the number in standard form. Each student will also respond to replies made by other students on his or her own post throughout the unit. Make sure to review student responses regularly. LESSON GOALS • Convert a very small number to scientific notation. • Convert a very large number to scientific notation. • Convert a very small number written in scientific notation to standard form. • Convert a very large number written in scientific notation to standard form.
