LESSON GOALS • Evaluate expressions involving integers, using the order of operations. • Evaluate expressions involving positive rational numbers, using the order of operations. FLORIDA STANDARDS • MAFS.K12.MP.7.1 Look for and make use of structure. PACING One class period, approximately 60 minutes CONTENT BACKGROUND In Lessons 1.02 and 1.03, students learn to simplify numerical and algebraic expressions by using the order of operations and combining like terms. The mnemonic PEMDAS is common for students to use to recall the correct order of operations. While the P in PEMDAS stands for parentheses, students must understand that grouping symbols can include parentheses, brackets, braces, and fraction bars. In Lesson 1.03, students apply the distributive property to numerical and algebraic expressions. In future lessons, students extend their experience with expressions to work with equations. MATERIALS • reference Guide pages 2−7 • practice Activity Book pages 2−4 • Overview and Toolkit presentations KEYWORDS Students can preview definitions of keywords hyperlinked throughout the lesson. • numerical expression • order of operations Expressions Use this guide to accompany Lesson 1.02, Semester A. 6 ExprESSIONS
