Exchange Ideas Use this guide to accompany Lesson 2.01, Semester A. FLORIDA STANDARDS • MAFS.8.EE.3.7b. Solve linear equations with rational number coefficients, including equations whose solutions require expanding expressions using the distributive property and collecting like terms. • MAFS.K12.MP.3.1 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. • LAFS.68.WHST.1.1a. Introduce claim(s) about a topic or issue, acknowledge and distinguish the claim(s) from alternate or opposing claims, and organize the reasons and evidence logically. • Also LAFS.68.WHST.1.1c., ELD.K12.ELL.MA.1 PACING One class period, approximately 60 minutes 2.01 DISCUSSION: EQUATIONS To introduce some of the concepts covered in this unit, students complete an assignment and post it to the discussion board. For this assignment, students create an equation in one variable with at least 4 operations. To participate in the discussion, students will solve another student's equation and write the steps they used to solve it . Students will also explain why it is easier to undo operations in a certain order. Each student will also respond to replies made by other students on his or her own post throughout the unit. Make sure to review student responses regularly. LESSON GOALS • Solve linear equations with rational number coefficients, including equations whose solutions require expanding expressions by using the distributive property and collection of like terms. MATERIALS • Exchange Ideas Threaded Discussion Rubric • Overview presentation • Alternate Assignment: Exchange Ideas • Alternate Assignment Answer Key: Exchange Ideas 62 EXCHANGE IDEAS
