Achieve Online School – 2019 Transformation Award Winner

For using digital learning opportunities to drive student achievement.

Achieve Online School, the only full-time 6–12th grade alternative education school in Colorado Springs, integrates online and hands-on instruction to provide students with an individualized approach rather than the traditional one-size-fits-all model.

Teachers are able to customize and blend their own teaching curricula, FuelEd courses, and outside content using PEAK, FuelEd’s personalized learning platform. PEAK also provides reports and analytics, as well as alerts and student progress notifications that teachers can access online or on their phones.

Achieve Online was recognized this year for successfully using blended learning to provide flexible options for at-risk students and engage them with extracurricular opportunities such as archery, rock climbing, and ropes courses. The diverse student body is small, allowing for more one-to-one attention from instructors so that each student is better positioned to accomplish their academic goals.

While Achieve Online is a full-time online public school, students have the option to meet with their teachers and ask questions in person, as well as utilize the school’s robust facilities such as the learning lab and gym. For students who need additional resources, there are counselors, a social worker, and even a service dog available on campus.

Some students complete all their coursework online, where Achieve Online teachers are available to answer questions via phone, email, and Skype.

Achieve Online’s blended learning system has demonstrated visible success, and both teachers and students have been pleased with the program and the FuelEd digital curriculum. Students who previously struggled at their brick-and-mortar educational institutions have found their safe space at Achieve Online.

“It works for the gifted kids who want to work ahead,” said Jo Ann Davis, a lead teacher at Achieve Online School. “It works for the kids who can’t sit still in the classroom. It works for the kids who struggle, who are dyslexic, who have learning disabilities. It works for all of us.”

About the Transformation Award

The Transformation Awards recognize schools, districts or organizations that are successfully transforming the way teachers teach and students learn. Achieve Online School was one of seven programs honored in 2019, out of more than 2,000 school districts nationwide, for modernizing the way K–12th grade students experience education.

Each Transformation Award winner uses Fuel Education’s portfolio of online courses and adaptive learning tools to meet the varying needs of their students, who represent different demographic, economic and geographic backgrounds. The winning programs use online learning to overcome challenges in unique and inventive ways, whether through providing students with the means to earn a high school diploma after dropping out, filling teacher vacancies, helping students recover credits, differentiating instruction based on real-time progress data or providing students with access to a wider variety of elective courses.

“Education is not one-size-fits-all, which is why Fuel Education works to provide unique solutions that meet the needs of unique students,” said Russ Roselle, senior vice president at FuelEd.

“The winners of this year’s Fuel Education Transformation Awards are creating incredible opportunities for their students, meeting their students’ immediate academic needs, and going above and beyond by using digital curriculum and content to provide unparalleled personalized learning experiences,” said Roselle.
