Hillsborough County Public Schools have been pioneers in the field of online education and were advocates for in changing the virtual education law in Florida. They understand the power of a quality online education and have a mission to use it to improve the education of diverse populations of student residing in their district. They are serving over 150 kids full-time in their K–8 and have over 12,000 FuelEd Online Course (formerly Aventa) enrollments in their high school program.
They use enterprise-wide access of FuelEd curriculum to provide an excellent online education to as many students as possible. They utilize this in programs for full-time middle school students, full-time high school students, and part-time students in grades 6–12. In doing so they have removed many barriers (including financial ones) to providing their students a high quality online learning curriculum.
They can offer their credit recovery program to kids of all ages, including those who have previously dropped out. Hillsborough can give the opportunity to students nearing adulthood to graduate with a high school diploma. The ensure success with a dedicated staff of Florida State-certified teachers and by keeping students engaged with activities like tutoring sessions and monthly field trips. They are in the process of training 300 additional teachers who will be teaching 4–6 courses apiece.
